Classics and Karosserie beauties

Adams (of London Rolls-Royce dealers Adams and Oliver) and then by Captain Frederick Henry, a wealthy antiques dealer from Gloucestershire and a car loving bon vivant. He exchanged his Bugatti Royale for the flamboyant Rolls-Royce through Simmons of Park Lane, London.  The Royale (the Binder-bodied coupe de ville) was a car he had been using as a regular driver throughout England and to France, being both UK and French registered, sometimes to his own embarrassment. Despite enjoying the Royale to its fullest, albeit in economically challenged England, the shortage of petrol for a car doing 5 miles to the gallon, and the costs to maintain a car that was increasingly difficult to get replacement parts for, such as tires, became tiresome.

This unique car was shipped to America and its successive owners were D.I. Buchanan, Robert P. Meyerhoff of Pasadena, and George Raninoff.  In 1985, 2 MS was then purchased by a Englishman living in Bombay , the car underwent its most extensive restoration and at the Rolls-Royce Owners Club National Meet in Monterey, CA, in 1991 was a 'Chief Judges Choice' winner. At the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance in 1992 it captured the Lucius Beebe Memorial Trophy, awarded to the Rolls-Royce considered most in the tradition of Lucius Beebe, who served as a judge in the early years.
Through a strange twist of fate, I met the owner inOmay

  • This is 2MS -at the Harrah's Imperial Car Collection in Vegas. Prior to this I last saw her in a private collectors home in Danville, in a gated community that shall remain unnamed. Of the 1680 Phantom IIs, this is the only example that recieved coachwork from Figoni et Falaschi, one of the most sought after design houses for the period. Known for thier smooth, flowing designs, Figoni et Falaschi made this Rolls untypical of coachhwork found on other Phantoms. The lines of the car, especially at the rear distinguish it from any other Rolls-Royce.

The Prince of Nepal commisioned Figoni et Falaschi to create this unique example. The result was and still is a very elegant car that hides it enourmous size. The Phantom II was the largest chassis these coachbuilders had ever worked on!

  • Unfortunately these had to be made in the fluorescent and really poor lighting at Harrah;s.

  • Limited room to take a full body shot, but enough to show the beautiful body work done by Figoni & Falaschi in the late '30s. It was re-bodied soon after it was bought (by the original owner, the Prince of Nepal) who replaced the original body with the classic opulent curves of the Karosserie school..He choose F&F probably the greatest of the Art Deco builders of that era. among Van Vooren, Franay, Letourner et Marchand, Saoutchik

  • Here is a picture of 2MS from the Super cars site. now cataloged as a Pillarless Berline. Characteristic of the era is the "goutte d'eau," or "teardrop" shape, which was regarded as the most aerodynamically efficient form. Aviation science flourished between the world wars, and engineers such as Antony Lago and Jean Andreau brought the lessons learned in the air to earth. In collaboration with Lago's company Talbot-Lago, stylist Joseph Figoni created the iconic Talbot-Lago T150-C-SS coupe — nicknamed Tear Drop by the automotive press.

  • Here is the Phantom II , photographed (not by me) in the hills around Danville. The rear of the car is very much like the F&F bodied 1936 Delahaye 135 Competition Court Coupe

  • This picture tells you why 2MS won at Pebble Beach.. The restoration is beautiful and very detailed. with a lot of effort to meet the original F&F work. When I saw her in Danville this is what she looked like.
